Light Cleaving to Light
One of the most beautiful doctrines in the Restoration is that light recognizes light. This comes from Doctrine and Covenants 88: “For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth… light cleaveth unto light.” D&C 88:40. This scripture describes a spiritual law, not just a poetic phrase. It teaches that like is attracted to like, especially in the realm of spiritual things.
In my life I can see how people of light are naturally drawn to each other. It feels very similar to how a magnet finds another magnet. When someone carries goodness, kindness, honesty, humility, and purity, their presence is familiar. I’ve met people and instantly felt peace around them. I’ve sensed sincerity in their smile and goodness in their eyes. My spirit recognized something in them before any words were exchanged. That is light cleaving to light.
I’ve also noticed that others feel the light within us even if they cannot explain it. There are moments when strangers open up, trust me, or feel calm simply being near me. It isn’t anything I say; it is the Spirit in them recognizing the Spirit in me. A person’s smile, tone, warmth, and presence can carry something unseen and yet unmistakable. People can feel light.
At the same time, darkness becomes uncomfortable around light. Just as walking out of a dark room into bright sunlight makes the eyes recoil, spiritual darkness sometimes resists brightness. This explains why some people distance themselves when I start living at a higher level. Others may feel exposed because the light reveals what they want to hide. And still others are drawn to me because they are searching for what they feel inside but have not yet found. C. S. Lewis illustrated this perfectly in The Screwtape Letters. Satan’s strategy is always to dim a person’s light, to isolate them, distract them, or convince them they do not really shine. The adversary knows that light attracts more light and weakens darkness.
People truly do feel pulled toward light. It is like seeing a campfire when you are lost in the wilderness. When everything around you is dark and cold, your instincts point you toward warmth and safety. In the same way, when people are hurting emotionally, spiritually, or mentally, they seem to gravitate toward someone who carries warmth, calm, and Christlike steadiness. Light becomes a refuge.
I’ve realized that clean mirrors reflect the most light. A mirror produces nothing on its own; it simply makes visible the brightness it receives. My heart is the same. Repentance cleans the mirror of my soul. Christ is the light I reflect. The cleaner my heart becomes, the brighter that reflection is. And truly, light cleaves to that brightness.
Modern prophets and apostles have taught this same principle with clarity. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught that as we emulate the Savior’s light, we will attract others to Him. President Gordon B. Hinckley said the light of the gospel will shine through us and that people will see something in our countenance. Elder David A. Bednar explained that the Light of Christ is not just a feeling but a power, and that as we obey, that power increases within us. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland reminded us that in a darkening world, the light of discipleship becomes more obvious and more needed.
C. S. Lewis, again in The Screwtape Letters, described how the adversary hates when a human begins to develop spiritual light. He hates it because it strengthens the person, attracts others toward goodness, weakens temptation, and exposes the lies of the enemy. Screwtape warns Wormwood that if a human continues to gain spiritual brightness, they may become “dangerously radiant,” influencing others toward God simply by existing. Lewis understood the same truth that the restored gospel teaches: light spreads, light multiplies, and light attracts.
In reflecting on all of this, I realize that becoming a person of light is not about being perfect. It is about being aligned with Christ. It is about letting Him shine through me. And the more I seek Him, the more naturally my life will draw and give light, fulfilling that eternal law that light cleaves unto light.

También he notado que otros sienten la luz que hay dentro de nosotros aunque no puedan explicarlo. Hay momentos en los que desconocidos se abren, confían en mí o se sienten tranquilos simplemente al estar cerca. No es algo que yo diga; es el Espíritu en ellos reconociendo al Espíritu en mí. La sonrisa, el tono, la calidez y la presencia de una persona pueden llevar algo invisible pero inconfundible. La gente siente la luz.
Al mismo tiempo, la oscuridad se incomoda ante la luz. Así como salir de una habitación oscura a un lugar lleno de luz puede hacer que los ojos se encojan, la oscuridad espiritual a veces resiste el brillo. Esto explica por qué algunas personas se alejan cuando empiezo a vivir en un nivel más elevado. Otras pueden sentirse expuestas porque la luz revela lo que quieren ocultar. Y otras más se sienten atraídas porque están buscando lo que sienten en su interior pero aún no encuentran. C. S. Lewis ilustró esto perfectamente en Cartas del Diablo a su Sobrino. La estrategia de Satanás siempre es apagar la luz de una persona, aislarla, distraerla o convencerla de que no brilla realmente. El adversario sabe que la luz atrae más luz y debilita a la oscuridad.
Es cierto que las personas sienten un impulso hacia la luz. Es como ver una fogata cuando se está perdido en la oscuridad. Cuando todo a tu alrededor es frío y oscuro, tus instintos te llevan hacia el calor y la seguridad. De la misma manera, cuando las personas están heridas emocional, espiritual o mentalmente, parecen gravitar hacia alguien que lleva calidez, calma y una estabilidad semejante a la de Cristo. La luz se vuelve un refugio.
Me he dado cuenta de que los espejos limpios reflejan más luz. Un espejo no produce nada por sí mismo; solo hace visible la claridad que recibe. Mi corazón es igual. El arrepentimiento limpia el espejo de mi alma. Cristo es la luz que reflejo. Y cuanto más limpio está mi corazón, más brillante es ese reflejo. Verdaderamente, la luz se adhiere a esa claridad.
Los profetas y apóstoles modernos han enseñado este mismo principio con gran claridad. El presidente Dieter F. Uchtdorf enseñó que a medida que emulemos la luz del Salvador, atraeremos a otros hacia Él. El presidente Gordon B. Hinckley dijo que la luz del evangelio brillará a través de nosotros y que la gente verá algo en nuestro semblante. El élder David A. Bednar explicó que la Luz de Cristo no es solo un sentimiento, sino un poder, y que al obedecer, ese poder aumenta dentro de nosotros. El élder Jeffrey R. C. S. Lewis, nuevamente en Cartas del Diablo a su Sobrino, describió cómo el adversario odia cuando un ser humano comienza a desarrollar luz espiritual. Lo odia porque fortalece a la persona, atrae a otros hacia la bondad, debilita la tentación y expone las mentiras del enemigo. Screwtape advierte a Wormwood que si un ser humano continúa adquiriendo brillo espiritual, puede llegar a ser “peligrosamente radiante”, influyendo en otros hacia Dios simplemente por existir. Lewis entendió la misma verdad que enseña el evangelio restaurado: la luz se esparce, la luz se multiplica y la luz atrae.
Al reflexionar sobre todo esto, me doy cuenta de que convertirme en una persona de luz no se trata de ser perfecto. Se trata de estar alineado con Cristo. Se trata de permitir que Él brille a través de mí. Y cuanto más lo busco, más naturalmente mi vida atraerá y dará luz, cumpliendo esa ley eterna de que la luz se adhiere a la luz.
